The Sound of a Memory

On the strange little connection between music, memory, and the moments we somehow never forget.

dear diary,

Isn't it strange how a song can suddenly make you remember a version of yourself you haven't thought about in years?

Sometimes I hear a song and I'm not really listening to it anymore. Instead, I'm somewhere else entirely. Maybe I'm walking home from school, sitting in the back of a car, getting ready for something, or lying awake when I should probably be sleeping.

The song itself hasn't changed. I'm the one who has.

♫ · ♫ · ♫ a song can become a tiny time capsule.
One minute of music can hold an entire afternoon.

I think that's why certain songs feel almost impossible to separate from certain periods of life. They become attached to places, people, seasons and tiny ordinary moments that didn't seem important at the time.

And maybe that's what makes music so good at preserving memories. It gives the brain something familiar to return to.

A melody can bring back the feeling of a rainy afternoon without bringing back every single detail. You might not remember exactly what you were wearing or what you said, but somehow you remember how the day felt.

Futile Dedvices - Sufjan Stevens
A song played on repeat during some of the toughest times of my life.
Mrs Magic (Strings Version) - Strawberry Guy
Reminds me so much of him..
Duvet - boa
Sounds the way I imagine my soul looks

I love that something as simple as pressing play can make the past feel close again. Not exactly the same, and not something you can truly return to — just close enough to remember.

Maybe that's why we keep certain songs even after we've stopped listening to them.

A quiet nostalgic moment
some memories have a soundtrack

Some songs belong to a specific version of us. And sometimes, hearing them again is like opening an old little drawer and finding someone we used to be.

Maybe songs don't really become memories. Maybe they simply give our memories somewhere to live.
